- Beard, Laura. Acts of Narrative Resistance: Women's Autobiographical Writings in the Americas.
(available from University of Virginia Press, Fall 2009).
Pairing a series of life narratives by women from different cultures and traditions of the Americas, Beard focuses on the three specific genres of testimonio, metafiction, and the family saga as the story of a nation. In these "genres of resistance," women insist on speaking about and naming their own experiences instead of succumbing to the cultural definitions imposed upon them. Beard situates her work in the context of not only other feminist studies of women’s autobiographies, but also the continuing study of Inter-American literature that is demanding more comparative and cross-cultural approaches.
