  • Halloran, Vivian Nun. Exhibiting Slavery: The Caribbean Postmodern Novel as Museum.

(available from University of Virginia Press, Fall 2009.)

Caribbean postmodern historical novels about slavery function, Halloran argues, are virtual museums of the transatlantic slave trade in simultaneously showcasing and curating a collection of primary documents within their pages. In highlighting specific works of art and narrative objects extraneous to their plots, these novels demand that their readers go beyond the books themselves to sort out fact from fiction. Halloran’s emphasis on the interrelationship between historical memory and a mourning of the dead offers a new comparative framework for both discussing Caribbean literary texts and analyzing the implications of the postmodern genre itself.
