- Julie Lee. The Negro Problem meets the Yellow Peril: Interracial Encounters in African American and Asian American Literatures, 1896-1937
(forthcoming from NYU Press, 2011).
The Negro Problem meets the Yellow Peril studies a series of interracial encounters and relationships that appear in early twentieth-century African American and Asian American texts by Edith and Winnifred Eaton, Nella Larsen, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Younghill Kang, examining what blacks and Asians wrote and imagined about each other. Their reciprocal representations underscore and illuminate the mutual constitution of African American and Asian American identities.
